RAW Awakening

The other night Corey and I attended the RAW Awakening show at the Powerhouse Event center in downtown Boise. What is RAW? Read here.

I will be the first to admit I had a somewhat naive concept of the event going into it. I knew it required "cocktail attire" and it was an art show featuring the work of local photographers, makeup artists, musicians etc. but I was unaware of how it would all come together. I was thinking a quiet evening, sipping red wine and browsing displays of local artists...WRONG!!!

Local artists had booths set up exhibiting their latest work. For the first hour or so you got to walk around, meet the artists, ask questions and enter in to win free art pieces. Corey entered into a Jeff Summers raffle and won (of course he did...this man has the most amazing luck I have ever come across). We get our prize photo Sunday (I will post a picture of it). Around 8:30, the show kicked off with 2 films, 2 bands followed by artist introductions. I believe there was belly dancing in there somewhere, but we missed it. Dang! The night was packed with entertainment and although it wasn't quite what I had expected of the evening, we still had fun.

Nino Lobos Band Playing (check on the beard on the guy in the sports coat, Corey was totally jealous of it ha!)
The event featured all different types of artists, which in turn drew a rather diverse crowd.  Although the invitation stated "cocktail attire," people were dressed in anything from crush red velvet pants to holy jeans and hooded sweatshirts (how this classifies as cocktail attire, I don't know). One thing I do know is that no matter what people were wearing, they all seemed to feel beautiful and confident in their own sense. I quickly realized "cocktail attire" is not a universal term that can be defined by a form-fitted dress, just as beauty cannot be easily defined. You cannot bottle it up, it is not a cookie cutter look or appeal, which is what makes it beautiful. So whether you're sporting a baseball hat or a tiara, wear it with confidence and it will become beautiful.

Here's what we wore to the event:

Shirt: Target, Pants: Gap or Banana, Shoes: Zappos
Hat: Goorin Bros. (in Portland)
This is the dress I almost wore to graduation, but decided to save it for my next special occasion which just so happened to be RAW Awakening:
Necklace: Francesca's, Clutch: my grandmothers, Shoes: Vogue via Zappos
The dress? None other than the fabulous Michael Kors!!! I purchased this dress at Macy's for less than $34 (originally $150)!!! PS the purple wrist band was required for event entry, it was not part of my attire ;-)
Dress: Michael Kors, Tights: Simply Vera via Kohl's

Some of my favorite artists of the night:
Mike Bryant - Boise Pro Photography. He put a comical twist on our favorite action figures, see  some of the photos here (I will be working with Mike for a March photo shoot...stay tuned for details...)
Maggie McCoy, she uses glitter in her many of her colorful paintings...LOVE!!!
Marc Wolverton Photography (he really tells a story through use of images, loved the graveyard series)
Bonnie Melinda (Obsessed with her "octopus" drawing)
Jacob Cain Photography- He photographed an *amazing* shoot at the Old Penitentiary with a Greek mythology theme, the series is entitled "The 'gods' Have Fallen" (view it here)
Mike Kleinwachter - a one of a kind sculptor who creates some interesting characters, which gave me some perfect Christmas ideas for my brother-in-law (see below)

    1. The event was bursting with talent, so glad to see you amongst the local artist. I'm looking forward to our photo shoot. Hopefully I'll get a nice tan in Jamaica just in time for our photo session :-)

  2. Ok, first of all: I love the dress :-) Not everyone can wear white, but it really suits you!
Your thoughts on confidence and beauty are so true, and even though I do prefer cocktail attire at formal events, I think this one qualified for all kinds of outfits, since it was all about arts and expressing yourself. Nice!

    1. White can definitely be a tricky color. When I wear a more neutral or softer tone, I often accent with a bold color lipstick or necklace (in this case I did both). :-) I'm glad to see my perspective of beauty and confidence makes sense to someone else too! Thanks for reading. I love getting your comments!!!
