We purchased this vanity from Renewal in downtown Boise for my birthday (yes, that was in October). The piece is originally from San Francisco.
Since our bedroom is chocolate brown (the paint name is literally "melted chocolate"), the original dark finish on the vanity was not going to work in our room. We decided to do a crackle finish to keep the antique feel.
Painting furniture can be tricky, especially when doing the crackle technique. We did this technique on our fireplace, so we were used to the product. You might want to test it on a scrap piece of wood to see how it applies and dries. Final tip? Have patience!!! (not my strongest trait). Here are the steps we took:
1). Sand furniture thoroughly & wipe clean to remove sand dust particles.
2). Apply crackle glaze (important to make sure you apply evenly). The thicker you put on the glaze, the bigger the cracks. Be careful, too much glaze can cause paint to slide off or clump.
3). Give the glaze time to dry (1-4 hours), but not more than 4 hours otherwise you may need to reapply. We played it safe and let it dry for 2.5 hours.
4). Apply your desired paint color, we went with an ivory tone. Note: whatever bade color the furniture is prior to glaze application will be the color of the cracks.
5). Allow paint to dry overnight.
6). We chose to apply a clear protective coat, since I will be using the vanity frequently. This will help avoid chipped paint. Warning: The protective coat we used caused some yellowing in spots (test in a discreet place before applying to the whole piece, lesson learned).
7). We purchased new knobs at Anthropologie for an elegant twist.
8). Admire your amazing DIY accomplishment.

Corey gave me the perfect Christmas presents to accessorize my vanity:
Necklace Holder: Kohl's |
I am in love with these drawer organizers Corey gave me for Christmas. I put one in each of the top drawers. Notice my earring collection is growing (I finally can wear them next weekend).
Drawer Organizer: Home Goods |
Now all I need is a vanity stool and my little beauty corner will be complete. That task is more difficult than one might think. I've been looking for months and they're all so expensive and in the wrong colors. I might try talking Corey into building me one ;-)
